Key Members of the Glen Hydro Team

Richard Haworth

Co-owner & Technical Director

Richard is a qualified mechanical engineer with wide experience including 18 years in various roles in engineering and manufacturing companies. In the last ten years he has focused on hydro development, through the establishment of Glen Hydro. In his role as Technical Director he has been responsible for the engineering and design aspects of some 300 projects Glen Hydro has been involved in to date.

Primary areas of ownership are:

• Client relationships
• Oversight of technical design, construction and commissioning of all schemes
• Lead on liaison with DNOs (electric grid companies)

He also participates in the Feed-in-Tariff Working Party and the Scottish Government’s Hydro Task and Finish Group, presenting the industry’s position on levels of support required. He holds an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Newcastle University.

When not working on hydro schemes, Richard’s interest include climbing mountains and coaching junior rugby.

John Heaton

Projects Director

John is a chartered electrical engineer with over twenty years’ experience in the engineering industry, the last fourteen of these in renewable energy, primarily in the hydro sector. John has been involved in dozens of hydro schemes of all types and sizes across the British Isles. His practical experience of permitting, construction, operation and refurbishment provide a strong basis for developing and delivering practical and cost-effective designs. John has personally overseen the build of numberous hydro schemes, including, at 1.6MW, the largest community hydro scheme in the UK. John holds an honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University College, London.

Working in the hydro industry gives John a good excuse to get outdoors, which is generally where he prefers to be. Given the opportunity, John will happily plunge headlong into undergrowth, claiming orienteering as the justification. When there is no undergrowth to hand, John enjoys family life, running, baking, gardening, DIY and usually has a long list of things he’d like to do, should the time allow.

Tim Copeland

Senior Hydro Engineer

Tim is an electrical engineer with extensive experience of permitting, design, construction and operation of hydro schemes. Tim has commissioned a number of projects for Glen Hydro including the Kinnaird Weir hydro scheme which uses an Archimedes screw and the 950kW Allt Mhuic scheme alongside Loch Arkaig.

Tim is our lead on control issues and co-ordinates the development of the analyses tools we use on the sites we support. He has much practical knowledge from reinstating and running his own scheme at his home just outside Blairgowrie.

Jonathan Appleby

Civil Design Engineer

Jonathan is a Chartered Civil Engineer and leads our in-house design operation with over 25 years’ experience in the design of water industry projects. His experience includes the detailed design of Coanda screened intakes, remote pressure pipelines, power houses, tracks and bridges. Jonathan acts as design authority on the projects we design, build and manage. He holds an honours degree in Civil Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.

When not working for Glen Hydro, Jonathan can often be found running or walking in the Scottish mountains and also travels regularly to Africa volunteering for Christian Engineers in Development (CED) to assist communities building their own hydro electric projects.

Luke Milner

Commercial Director

Luke is the non-engineer in the team responsible for finance, administration, legal matters and anything else that comes along.

When not deep in a spreadsheet, Luke can generally be found either in the kitchen on a yacht.
